Age of Empires 3: Knights of the Mediterranean has quite a bit to live up to, though, given that every other new Age of Empires game has improved significantly upon those that came before it.
Released in 2005, it was the latest Age of Empires game for over fifteen years and has received quite a few expansions even before the announcement of Knights of the Mediterranean. Those DLCs, and the various Age of Empires spinoffs that have come out over the years, have at least served to keep players busy while waiting for new content.
Although not the most recent game in the Age of Empires series - that title goes to 2021's Age of Empires 4 - Age of Empires 3 is considered by many to be the most notable of the series.
